. FUJI ROCK EXPRESS '00

  • White Stage
  • Moby Operandis

I'd heard Moby was a nice guy, but geez, can you find a nicer, more consecientious fellow. Between-song patter consisted of inquiring if the audience was feeling good, comments on the beautiful scenery, an apology for being an ignorant american who can't speak Japanese, and after every song a ``thank you thank you thank you.'' Token gratitude? I doubt it. You got the impression that he meant everything he said.

Oh yeah, and the music? In a word, amazing, especially given the fact that he had a backing band, complete with a backup singer for vocals that are samples on record. Appearing a bit like a hyperactive David Byrne, Moby couldn't contain his overflowing energy, racing around the stage whenever he wasn't needed on the vocals or keyboard. Other times, he occupied himself with banging on the bongos and the drummer's cymbals. There's a boombastic, operatic quality to Moby's music, but fortunately he eschewed dry ice and theater. It was feel-good techno, a soaring exuberance that put a smile on everyone's face. Gimme some more of that, please.
