. FUJI ROCK EXPRESS '00

  • Green Stage
  • Rubber band

Getting bumped up on the schedule meant that Elastica played to a field full of people who were just starting to feel the effects of the night before. We'll hope that among the hundred or so festival-goers who were snoozing like babies during the British group's set there were none who had come expressly to see the band, but in any case it was an oddly diffuse set.

Elastica's appealing smartass pop and punk worked well under the circumstances and probably would have worked even better if the band had been more emotionally together. Lead singer Justine, dressed in what could be called Bubba couture (Dallas Cowboys tank top, loose jeans that exposed the crack of her ass), dropped lots of odd comments that no one understood and admitted that they weren't much of a band. "Five years and we're still not professional," she said, but it was only half an apology. Of course, that has always been part of the appeal of the band -- their offhanded regard for their own considerable talents. But it's taken them almost four years to come up with their second album, owing to lots of internal and external problems, and they still look like they're still working things out.

The crowd danced happily to the songs they knew, but even before the set was two-thirds over people started clearing out of the mosh pit (probably because no one was moshing.) You know what you missed.
