Groovy dorks
It was dusty and dry when Denki Groove closed out the weekend at the White Stage. The dust that kicked up had to compete with a huge inflatable beach ball that kept bouncing around the mosh pit. When the three tech members of the group came out and started sampling their own greetings and "aikotoba," the crowd was restless.
Unlike a lot of techno collectives, Denki Groove take their time. It was a full five minutes before they offered up the rhythmic goods. Less concerned with rockin' than with buggin', the "band" makes the most of its dorky image, mixing found sounds of cuties that they can only dream about into their beeps and bloops. "Oohh, baby baby, talk to me," goes a repetitive chorus to one of their more memorable singles, and that's exactly what the boys on stage sang.
Eventually, one of their minions came out in a yellow raincoat, top hat, and huge extended arms to sing and/or chant along with the beat-heavy melodies. The crowd churned and roiled as the clouds parted to reveal stars brighter than diamonds. The dust never settles on the dorks.
