HiGE

What Season Is It Again?

HiGE's MySpace page says "HiGE is here to rock your face off." While I didn't see any faceless people walking around during their Saturday morning White Stage performance, I'm sure their 90s influenced alt-rock numbers helped more than a few spectators shake any sleeping dust left on their face off.

A fair sized crowd, many of whom were sporting brand spankin' new black HiGE t-shirts, cheered as guitarist Hasashi Sato, bassist Tomoyuki Miyakawa, and drummer Hirotoshi Filipo appeared at 11:30 a.m. sharp and started playing a slightly trippy intro. Second drummer Koichi Koteisui Sato soon appeared wearing a Santa suit and was followed by vocalist Hisashi Suto. Suto was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and was riding on the back of a mystery man dressed as a ghost. Judging from their choice of apparel, someone evidently forgot to tell Sato and Suto that it's the end of July, not December. Perhaps they're big skiing or snowboarding fans and were paying their respects to Naeba Ski Resort.

Sato and Suto started playing with their bandmates, adding a psychedelic element to the their musical stylings. Part-way through a roadie brought Suto and guitar and from there
HiGE were all about the rock n' roll. Between songs, the sweaty frontman (you'd be sweaty too if you were jumping around in a hoodie in this heat) peppered his Japanese banter with English phrases such as "Hey Everybody." The attentive audience immensely enjoy what the Tokyo quintet had to offer and jumped, danced, and waved their hands in the air to show their appreciation.
