LEE 'SCRATCH' PERRY
前日に超ド級なライヴをかました3部作のJBトリビュート。JBのカリスマ性と影響力、そして独裁者で金に意地汚いという負の側面に、JBズから抜けたブーツィーの象徴であるド派手な衣装…これらすべてを今なお現役でやっているのがジャマイカの巨人、リー"スクラッチ"ペリーだ。
彼なくしてボブ・マーリィの成功もなかっただろうし、ザ・クラッシュの『ロンドン・コーリング』という名盤もなくて、パンクにいささか疲れたパンクスが頭を刈り込んでルーディになることもなかったわけだ。そして、日本でスカ以降のジャマイカ音楽が盛り上がることもなかった。僕が知っているたいていのルーディは、ザ・クラッシュを経由している。そんなこんなで、なんかしらフジとジョーを結びつけてしまう濃ゆいフジロッカーにとっては、マストなジジイ（←愛を込めて）なんじゃないだろうか。
ステージを見ればDJブースがなくて、本当にあのリー"スクラッチ"ペリーが出てくるのか？と疑問だった。確かにラスタっぽいヤツらがリハをしているんだけれど、バンドなんて予想外だった。周りからも似たような会話が聞こえ、何度タイムテーブルを見ても不安だったし、暗転してバンドが演奏しだしても、レゲエが流れ出したという少しの安心しか得られない。しばらくして、くぁ〜っ伝説降臨！トランク片手に（何故!?）、とろんとした目でヒゲは赤、頭から煙りを立ちのぼらせ、そしてド派手…あぁ、登場のニクいじらしも、出てきた瞬間にオレ色に染めてしまうのもブーツィと同じだったのか、と変な着地点に落ち着き、納得してしまった。
ングチャ、ングチャと鳴る上質なレゲエナンバーに、上手かないが心を揺さぶることに関しては一級品の揺らぎあるトースティングが乗る。そこへ、PA卓に陣取ったエイドリアン・シャーウッドのダブ処理が施され、完全なトリップ空間ができ上がる。御大はかなりご機嫌なようで、自らライターを取り出して「FIRE!」とオーディエンスの着火を煽り、「JUMP!!」と自ら跳ねて誘う。ミラーボールに反射する光が、地面の振動で騒ぎだして平衡感覚を狂わせていく。そして、トドメのひと言「No More Cigarette!!!」…この国は他地域では類を見ないほどに御法度だぜぇ？アウトローな発言はただそれだけで強烈なカンフル剤となり、オーディエンスはズブズブと深みにはまっていくのだ。
赤いジャケットに着替えて再度ハッスルする御大は一曲歌って「Good Night!」オイオイ、そりゃないだろうって雰囲気の中で再び登場し、弟子の名曲「エクソダス」を奪いとる。「オレが育てた奴だ、オレのおかげだ、だからオレの曲だ」そんなジャイアンな主張も見え隠れするが、いいのだ。何たって、リー"スクラッチ"ペリー、あんたがいなけりゃ、ここにいるオーディエンスは楽しみのいくらかを知らないままだったのだから。
