The not-so-friendly skies
As you enter the Palace of Wonder area, it’s hard to miss the massive skull-adorned biplane at the entrance. Straight from Glastonbury, this dangerous-looking piece of air transport was built by One-Eyed Sam, a veterran of the Palace area. He, Joe Rush and their Mutoid Waste Project are responsible for the massive junk sculptures that adorn POW, but they don’t create them here. Most are made in the UK and shipped here for the fest.
“First we build maquettes, and then once we have it right we make it big,” say Sam, dressed sharply in a red velvet sport coat. Festivals are their bread and butter, he explains, saying that they six months on the road and another six in the Uk, creating next year’s spectacle. From Fujirock, members of the Mutoid Waste Project head to the Burning Man festival and onto other fests, heading home to rest in September.
