Big presence, small space
Big Willie's Burlesque. Once again, one of Fuji Rock's most in demand acts, performing here, there, every frikin where. You name the stage, and you're just about sure to see Big Willie on his way down there, or packing his kit away and heading off for his next show.
These guys just put on such a damn good show. I could watch them a million times, and still be entertained. Big willy fronting tonight. Like he could be replaced! Funky D on sax. Check! Mikey Boyle on the planks. Derrick on pluckin duty. All ready to show us how burlesque is done, Naeba Shokudo Styles. This is the most intimate of their gigs this weekend, but the crowd spilleth over. As does their anticipation.
Wille has a new suit! At least one I've not seen before. Pinstripes. Good. Everyhing straight up and down about this performance too. Straight up. Good. Gettin down. Better. Burlesque to come? Best! We start with Funky D and one of his trademark 'phone solos. One of many to come tonight. Good. "We're gonna bring the girls out now!" Great! Out come Carolina and Dakota, two of the finest girls you're likely to see. Unfortunately the limited space means that for this one we don't get the full striptease. Damn. Carolina in black and Dakota in red. Good. But something's missing... The tease. No matter though, these girls earn their keep out there. Hot damn!
Willie immediately goes goggle-eyed, and the sweat springs uup. This man is the hardest working drummer in burlesque! Somebody, take that man's coat! He's an overheated time bomb. WHAM! Carolina up to the task, that jacket's off, and Willie hasn't missed a beat! Let's have some fun tonight! Mike, you've got a girlfriend! Where did she come from? "We're at Fuji Rock, let's have some fun! Grab yourself a spliff or drink some wine!" If you say so Willie! Be your guest? Don't mind if I do! Thanks for the moment girls, don't go too far, we may need you again in a moment!
Pass The Peas, it's Mike's turn for a solo. His new girlfriend is trying to help! He doesn't need it! Willy and his band show their tightness with a few tight stops and starts, led by Derrick. Great stuff! "You want the girls? OK!" Mmmm, gumboots. My fave footwear of the fest, Dakota and Carolina back, this time in a timed dance wielding a Japanese parasol each. "The Beatles? You know those guys? Ringo? George? Yoko Ono? D'ya know Yoko Ono?" Of course it's Lady Madonna, especially for Funky D. "Help me out!" cries willie and the whole crowd is singing along! Great drum Solo from Big Willie too, not to be outdone!
Out come the girls one last time. Don't be afraid to get up and dance! Gringo! And get up and dance they did! I'll be back for more... Now when's the next slot they're playing? Crystal Palace, before Gogol Bordello? SOLD!
